I got my 2020 javelina on January 20th during Fort Huachucas archery javelina hunt. I had hunted every weekend and free day all month without seeing any javelina. I had been hunting areas that had produced javelina for me before, usually glassing from dawn to dusk. All the areas I was hunting had javelina sign in them, but I just couldn’t find them. I was beginning to think I wouldn’t fill my tag this year. After glassing all morning in a spot where I had taken a javelina every year for the past three years, and still seeing nothing, I decide to try something different. Two years ago I had been predator calling in a place a few miles away and called in some javelina. I decided to quit what I was doing and go check out that spot. The spot was near a pond in an area that seemed like a good bedding area. I set up on the north side of the pond and started blowing on a predator call. After a few minutes I saw a lone javelina in the brush on the other side of the pond. He kept coming closer and stopped on the far edge of the pond. He stopped just outside of my comfortable range so I decide not to take a shot. He milled around for a little bit and then left. I tried to follow after him but had to give up because the brush was too thick to stalk trough. I headed back to my spot on the north side of the pond. I waited around for a while contemplating my next move feeling disappointed. Just then I spotted something moving in the brush on the other side of the pond. It was a lone javelina coming around the east side of the pond and heading north. When he disappeared from view I nocked an arrow and headed in his direction hoping to intercept him. I hadn’t moved very far when he popped up less than 10 yards in front of me. He froze looking in my direction as I fumbled with my release trying to hook it to my bow string. After what seemed like a long time I hooked my string and drew my bow. Just as he started to leave I put an arrow in him and he dropped a few feet away. I’m pretty sure this was the same javelina I had called in earlier. He weighed 38 lbs dressed and is the first boar javelina I’ve ever taken. I thank God that I was able to take this animal after a long hunt that I didn’t think would work out. When what you usually do isn’t working don’t be afraid to try something new.

PETA would have been up MGM's arse with an army on this one.... life was simpler back in the 1930's. And entertainment was definitely better.

they don't make them much prettier or symmetrical than that one! looks low to mid teens to me as well. far stretch from the biggest 3-point ever but that doesn't take anything away from him. This buck that my brother helped on i think might have been one of the biggest 3-points at the time it was killed (early 2000's) but there have been several since that are bigger. i think he netted mid-high 120's if i remember right.

Probably 330 give or take Mid day stash pile for me and 2 of my buddies First pile to the buyer How did everyone else do?

Looks like a mature lion from the other day (time stamp is correct). Guess I better get a tag and be prepared. Other pictures are older but from the same camera location, I wonder if it is the same lion. Jeff

Where I grew up I had a honey hole that I harvested most of my better deer in and the terrain looked the same for the most part. I only took three people out there and only one of them didnt get lost. Lost my dad for the better part of a day, we found him about 2.5 miles in the opposite direction from the truck. Another one I lost for almost a day, it was getting dark and starting to snow he was lucky since he didnt have good clothing on. I always carry a compass and take a bearing before I leave the truck, I also keep a pack with enough gear to spend a night out even if I know for sure I am only going one mile from the truck/road.

About 18 years ago I was scouting for an upcoming Deer hunt. I was driving down a two track that was paralleling a fence. The road came up to another fence intersection and stopped. I got out to skirt the edge of this big Mesa to see if there was anything interesting like a road or tank or cliff rose. I expected to only take maybe 20 minutes so I left all of my gear and water at the truck. Didn’t even lock the doors. That’s how quick I expected the trip to take. About 10 minutes into it, I find a decent 4 point shed. That usually means the other side is nearby. I decided to look for it for a little while. Maybe an hour into looking for the other side, I decided to go back to the truck. I then started to see a lot of fresh sign and beds. I then decided to follow those and check them out. I started to spook deer here and there and decided to make it to the other end of the Mesa. I saw all kinds of good stuff that day and was feeling good. I knew I had to go back, so i headed back. The truck was about 2 miles away I figured. I started getting sick after a bit and had to stop about every 100 yards or so. I still had my mind together and really thought I was going to cause real damage to myself like a stroke or heat exhaustion. I made myself focus on playing it safe and stopping to rest periodically. I finally made it to the truck and all of my water was real hot which may have been a good thing because I would have drink it real fast and it was so hot I had to drink it very slowly. On the way out, I came up to a vehicle heading the opposite way and we got to talking. He offered me a beer and it was the best one I ever had. We talked for another 20 minutes and he gave me another one. It was the second best beer I ever had.

If you really want to take them hunting on a regular basis , remember our lowly javelina hunts when the application period is open in October. Many a kid got their hands bloody for the first time on these easy to draw , plentiful critters. Good luck and enjoy hunting with your kids! Don't rule out small game either. I drug my poor dad out so many Saturday and Sunday mornings to shoot dove when I was a kid. Looking back, he never got to sleep in on a weekend during the fall. Great fun.
