1 pointWent out with some friends to help hunt javalinas and this guy shows himself at 2 hours before sundown. Put on the decoy and made a stalk around a mountain. Came around a corner and was face to face with the buck at 50 yards. I believe he never ran because I had the decoy on. Perfect hit on a beautiful 4x3 and he didn't go more than 80 yards. Another awesome hunt with my friends. #nobusiness

1 pointRecently moved to Flagstaff from Tempe and wanted to get opinions on hunting deer in unit 9. I usually hunt unit 8 and know that unit pretty well but it is kinda far out there and looking for something a bit closer to home that I could do day/afternoon trips to. From my initial OnX scouting the unit seems like it definitely viable for glassing and such but maybe there is something there I am not aware of. With that said I usually hunt archery. I know people get their panties in bunch here so to be clear I'm not looking to get details on your favorite hunting spot, just honest option if it is worth investing time and effort into getting to know a new unit or if I should just stick with 8 and suck up the drive and distance. Also if anyone out of Flagstaff is interested in a hunting partner or even just shoot some bow hit me up. New to the area and know hardly anyone here. Thanks!

1 pointThanks folks… lots of great information and responses. I had a Rem 700 in a 270 year back that I wish I didn’t get rid of as it would have been great for my boy and even made me start looking at them again. I currently have a Savage in a 22-250 for pig that is accurate as all heck but has too many known issues and big biggest is having to rubber band the mag since constantly falls out. My Tikka 7mag is probably one of my favorite guns, so I’ll probably try to stick with Tikka for him too and after reading your comments it will be the 7-08. I’ll just have to decide on a compact or full size. Again, I really do appreciate all the feedback.

1 pointStory of my first deer. (Shortened) After glassing, and stalking other bucks I eventually found myself at the top of a ridge overlooking a wash filled with cattle. As soon as my eyes focused on a calf I saw the white bottom of a 2 point buck jump behind a bush. I briskly started walking to get even with the buck as I was on top of the ridge and he was in the bottom of a wash. I was using an ultimate predator decoy, a silhouette of a doe that I Velcro on my bow, to hopefully lure in the rutting buck. I chased him from ridge to ridge til eventually I cut him off and waited for him to walk right in to me where the wash ended. Seconds after stopping my movement he emerged from behind a bush at about 65 yards. His eyes immediately locked on me, the doe decoy, and began walking right towards me. I ranged the cactus 17 yards in front of me that he would have to go around. I drew my bow without him noticing because of the decoy. When he approached the cactus he turned broadside to go around it and that’s when I let the arrow fly. The Rage broad head penetrated deeply into his vitals from what I could tell at the moment. Instantly blood spurted out of him and he took off down the wash he came from. After waiting an hour I started tracking. After finding little to no blood I eventually made my way back up the wash where I thought he was. I found a large puddle of blood and 10 feet farther there he was; crashed in the wash. I had finally killed my first buck and it was an archery otc hunt. It took a lot of hard days, sleepless nights, and practice to get it done but I did it. Super happy for my first buck. He’s not a monster but for my first deer I can’t complain. Thanks everyone for all the tips and advice. I couldn’t have done it without y’all. 9F8FCEC8-3952-4732-83AF-844D2E2DF364.MOV

1 pointI am shooting a 6 pin slider sight for the above 2 reasons. I hated fiddling with the slider when the shot presented itself. I now have pins 20-70 for hunting and can dial for long range practice or follow up shots if they give ya one. I am of firm belief that if the animal is still standing, I am still sending them! .19 diameter pins 20-50 and .10 for 60-slider.

1 pointIn many cases, the small changes by the AGFD are benefits because they are preemptive strikes to avoid much greater impact from voter-approved propositions that are virtually impossible to reverse and usually throw out the baby with the bathwater. See my other reply about bear baiting.
-
1 pointThe removal of bear baiting was a very smart move by AGFD. I know for FACT why it was done, and if it hadn't been done as preemptive rule, it's likely there would be NO spring bear hunting as happened in Colorado via a voter proposition.

1 pointThe SCR is a great reticle. .2 MIL subtensions are fantastic for accurate wind holds. But, for $1500, I would look at a used Steiner T5Xi upgrade over the Burris XTRII. 5-25×56 or even the 3-15×50. Unless you plan on shooting tiny targets at 1500, a 3-15 is plenty. I was shooting out to 1558 with some 3-15 & 3.5-18x scopes this weekend and was not underpowered. Especially for a hunting rifle. If you want to stick with FFP, do so. All I shoot is FFP. But that leaves out a lot of suggestions here. Look around on LRH & Snipershide for some amazing used optics in your price range. You can find a LOT of better scopes in your price range that way. I have purchased 6 or 7 used scopes with zero issues for about 55-75% of their new prices.

1 pointThat was my favorite part. No other hunters. No trucks, quads or side by sides driving by. It’s fun when there is no pressure, lots of deer, lots of bucks to glass up daily.
-
1 pointYes and people think in Sonora there are lots of them but truth be told there not as common as most people think and there are more bucks that score under 100 taken by 75% than bucks over 100 and not many over 110. It more about the experience and having fewer hunters to compete with but there is always that chance at a real trophy.

1 pointMy bad dude. We only caught like 35 in a few hours and there was only a couple hookers so I didn’t think it needed a report

1 pointThanks guys. I'll probably get out there a few more times with my oldest son. The kid just took his Hunters Education class and can start putting in for big game. My goal is to put him on some deer in 6a or 22 by Fall and not have to bring him to that mess so close to the border in the 36(s). I did a solo hunt and tagged out on a deer down south last year and can say my senses where even a bit too high for me to enjoy myself, much rather having my 11 yr old son back there with me.

1 pointI agree with both of the posts above. Also, I do believe coues (especially does) have a 1 square mile home range, it just is rarely anything like a square and it changes/ranges over time based on food, water and cover (pressure for bucks). Not sure if this part is relevant but expanding a bit on Matt's post, one place I have been hunting lately had 50 deer/sqmi in one area and 2 deer for the next 2 miles directly adjacent. You would think their is a fringe but it very much a specific habitat change. And that line changed seasonally because of the aspect.

1 pointIMO the deer do not migrate to lower elevations rather they go where the does are. I always find it interesting that on average, the further I hike into oblivian, the number of animals I see goes down. I swear the animals almost like the challenge of eluding us.
