Lol. Probably never occurred to him as he was sitting in his cushy office drinking Carmel lattes from Starbucks! Politicians really need to stay out of game management.

All good. I glassed that shed up and had to go back for it as I was busy packing this guy out.

I was lucky enough to draw a Wyoming bull bison tag last spring. I’ve put in for WY, AZ, and UT for a decade or so and pulled a AZ tag a few years back and was unsuccessful after sitting in a blind for 158 hours. I was really hoping for another chance as I really couldn’t bring myself to shoot a fenced one on a ranch or reservation (I’m 1hr from the Ft peck rez which has bison hunts but they are fenced). The season runs aug 15-dec31 and then they reopen it from jan1-31 if they haven’t had any buffalo migrate down from the park. They shut the hunt down as soon as they start feeding the elk in Jackson Hole which has traditionally been mid jan. I decided to go as late as I thought was comfortable without getting shut out. Turned out it was still early. These hunts used to be easy, the buffalo would show up in nov or dec and they’d be near 100% success. The last 5 years or so the buffalo just don’t come down. The snow was deep when we got there, so much so we needed horses just to get through it at all. The buffalo unfortunately still hadn’t come down. There was a rumor of one bull on the elk refuge, there were about 15 more on the park about 5 miles off and the rest were all way way off in the park and likely won’t be here before they close the season. Well my luck finally turned on wild bison. We picked up tracks in the river bottom first am and caught up to the lone old bull on horseback. I was able to get into about 125 yards. I tucked a 175 swift a frame into his heart with my 7mm STW, then another. He spun around and started heading out. Couldn’t believe it. I put the next two into his low shoulder to break him, which sort of worked. I had time to reload and put two more in the base of his skull before he finally tipped. All shots where lethal. Can’t believe how tough they are!!! We got him gutted and were able to get horses and a sled to him. They’ve got draft horses here to drag them out, I really didn’t think it was possible but they got him drug about a mile to the nearest retrieval road and loaded whole!!! He weighed 958# carcass weight! That puts him at about 1600-1700# on the hoof. Should make Boone and Crockett and we are gonna have a few years of great eating!! Super stoked to have finally ended this quest. We were able to get done early enough to get in a little skiing and are having him butchered and frozen right away so we can haul him home ready to go in the freezer (freezers!). Edit: Sorry about the sideway pics. They all looked the same on my phone.

Last year we talked to the son of the good outfitter. They own and lease ranches for cattle. They didn't have any openings but said we could hunt on a ranch they haven't had any hunters on before. Problem was there were no amenities, kind of lacking on roads in the area and 3/4 of the ranch his heavy timber so it lacked on glassing. For the price and they were only allowing 3 tags in the area it seemed worth it. When we got there it was pretty thick in alot of areas. Set camp up and we paid the rancher son to find a full time cook so we had awesome food the whole time. We stayed at the ranch hands house but stayed outside in tents. The first even seemed pretty depressing. Hard to glass and wind. Then wind all night and the next day. Ive hunted couse down in the 36s with wind before with no luck. But some of the open areas and lots of cold wind bucks were still on the move and we glassed up lots of deer. My hunting partner brought down an old hunting friend from Utah and has never hunted Coues before. So he was anxious for any respectable bucks. The deer were not really scared at all, never been hunted before, but we couldn't find any big guys, just 60-80" bucks. Right when we jumped in the truck to move on Scott spotted a buck that had some width and we jumped out. He was 160 yards off the road. Just stared at us. After about 25 mins of him and hawing if he wanted it (plus we shorten the hunt by one day, and when Scott came down form Utah he told us he made a mistake and his plane flight leaves on Sunday and not monday so 2 days lost. That gives us 3 days to hunt to fill 3 tags) So with that in his head he decided to shot it. 100 yards and he used my 280 AI 160 TMK ran 20 ft and died. The 160 TMK did its job almost a 4" hole and liquefied the heart. Funny how deer still run with no heart but it stills has some blood in the brain for a few seconds. NO exit but plenty of blood and vitals soup!! The next day the wind calm down. My buddy Kyle put a stalk on a really nice buck, while I watched from 900 yards. He got set up at 300 yards and I watched the deer jump, then a boom and watch it run off injured and around the mountain out of site.. Well that sucks. I guided them in to the spot where he hit the buck and they followed the blood trail After that I hiked down the road to start glassing. Spotted a little spike and then turn 90 degrees to start glassing and glassed up a doe in the open. I ranged her at 260 yards and got my gun out and ready for 260 yards just in case a buck come in. We already watched a big forky mount a doe so bucks are staying close to does. Put my gun in place and got ready. Kept glassing all the bushes and trees around her to find something. Then all of a sudden that spike comes down to her. Right then and there a nice buck jumps out to defend his women and scared the spike off. I thought to myself "oh crap this worked perfectly according to plan" It worked so good I didn't even take time to really break down the buck size and in my excitement jumped on my gun. Laid the gun on the berm and buck fever all over the place and shaking I shoot at 260 and miss!!! Crap!! He ran over 20 feet and stopped. This time I laid out on this slopped berm and really steady ( what a novel idea why didn't i do this in the first place). Put the cross hairs on and shot. Thud of a thuddd hit!!! I was alone so I jumped back on my binos to see where he went. Never moved dropped dead! Radio over to Scott and Kyle I got a buck down. They were excited! But kyle couldn't find his buck. So that sucked The 160 TMK did its job going 3060fps. Lances did his job with my loads, and shout out to Eric from Axis work on the 280AI. Broke the spine in half and liquefied the vitals. Holy crap this round is nice. Ruined some meat but gets the job done Here was my shooting position Some good food from our cook Our cook and we paid him 20 bucks each to clean and boil our heads, well worth it! The ranch hand. He showed us the ranch property and he kept spotting deer with his naked eye out to 500 yards and spotted deer 200 yards out in the shadows with his naked eye and we said your coming with us and tipped him for his services. Over all it was a fun hunt. Never saw any bucks over 95" but an area that has never been hunted I would of thought we would be passing up 90" bucks left and right looking for 105" bucks. Im sure they are there but we never saw them. Im sure if we dedicated a whole week we would of found some big boys but thats how it just how it happen this year. For the price it was still worth it for sure. No hunting pressure, no other hunters or anyone else even on this property. Food was awesome just a great hunt.

Got on this buck Saturday morning. I am sort of upset with myself for not putting down the camera and making a legit stalk on this buck but I'm also happy I got him on film. You can't tell in the video but there is an ocotillo at 34 yards that is too high to shoot over and blocked my shot. The buck is 76 yards from me when he stops and is staring at me in this video. I did make a play on them (not on video) and took a 77 yard shot and missed 6" over his back. No matter how much you shoot, you can't practice the buck fever adrenaline haha. Hopefully I can get on him again. Still getting used to using a camera also. It's definitely a learning curve so sorry for the random shakiness.

In 3c we rarely if ever, that i remember, saw horses until after the Rodeo Chediski fires. We have a house there and spend a lot of time there. They are everywhere now and all have babies with them. It don't take a biologist to figure out that this issue needs to be addressed in this area.

Circa 1967, I was working at the Jewel Box on 1st. Ave in downtown Phoenix. We sold a lot of Pythons, but we also sold lots of altered Colt Diamondbacks after they were introduced. We had them reamed to accept the .357 mag cartridge, and the barrel was restamped to reflect that. Later into the early 1970s, I went to work for American Wholesale Hardware out of Long Beach, CA as a road rep selling firearms and fishing gear to retailers here in AZ. S&W, Colt & Ruger were just three of the lines we sold. I wish I knew then what I know now and had the money to stash a few dozen S&W M29s and Colt Pythons. Likewise for Belgium-made Brownings. 🤬 As an aside, the owner of American Wholesale Hardware, Judge Anderson, provided a goodly portion of the financial backing for Ruger & Sturm to start their company. Thus, even when firearms were being meted out, we never lacked having plenty of whatever Ruger made at the time.

Well, a member on this forum joined me on the 11th. Put on a glassing clinic, and oh man the bucks were moving. Multiple stalks on bigger class bucks (nothing giant, but nice mature bucks). The best day to that point. Really had a great time meeting another member. Then the 12th happened. Bucks everywhere! I literally ran myself into the ground, 9 bucks spotted between 7am and 12:30pm. Ended my last stalk on the way to the truck! It was unreal. I have never sprinted across the desert like that. All day, wind sprints. I need diaper cream bad! Even though I did not fill my tag, my buddy filled his and I have some great insight on how to prepare for the next round. This was the funnest hunt I have ever been on. I have never stalked like that before, and to get so close so many times. I did let an arrow fly on the 12th, but I was holding low and it went just over the bucks back, I thought I hit him for a brief second. No hair on the broadhead but it was super close (my pin was 80 but he was 74 so I held low). Appreciate all the responses, feedback, etc. Really gem of a hunt. Now I need to buy some 12x50's!

You're honestly ridiculous. Horses were not in the Americas until the Spaniards brought them over. They are 100% feral and have no place on the landscape whether you like it or not.

You think there’s more than one 3x3 with a swhacker in the side of its face laying out there? I made this thread in case someone be stumbled on it. And to your comment about me not wanting it to be found so I could upgrade, all I’ll say is you can suck my dick. Why would I even make the thread then. What a douche bag thing to say.

Went back for that???!? I woulda just walked out with the shed. 😉

That was my first thought. However I think the deer did it. It was middle of nowhere so would have been an illegal that did it. It had other scrapes on the cactus at that area that had healed. If a person did it I'm not sure I would see that. Lastly, the match was within eyesight. So, the person could have done it twice. I'm leaning toward the buck shed one, had an unbalanced head, and solved the problem immediately. But who knows.

Squaring the bonus points would make the current system fairer to all. But the last time I explained this in more detail the responses seemed to suggest most hunters prefer the element of luck to have more impact on drawing a tag verses the fairer option to all.

My son decided last year he wanted to go javelina hunting. I figured because he has already killed a couple deer with a rifle, I would put him in for the general archery javelina hunt in January. I told him that he needed to start practicing with his bow and be confident out to 40 yards, which he did. About noon on the first morning, I finally glassed up a herd of about 15 pigs. As we started to hike to an area to get up wind, we bumped 4 deer, which proceeded to run right into the middle of them and scare them up the hill. We ended up having to hike up some pretty rough terrain, but eventually got to a point where I figured we would be above them. Not long after working our way down, we ended up hearing them not to far away. After passing on a small one at 10 yards, he finally got a decent sized pig at 20 yards, standing broadside, eating on a cactus. He let the arrow fly and hit it a little back, but was able to get on it again real soon and put a finishing shot in it. Unlike his dad, he didn't lose any arrows or miss any shots. Lol. Rest of the weekend was spent chasing quail with him. Love spending time in the hills with my kids.

Indeed. Also remember Camelback Guns, Wade's, Bellow's Sporting Goods, Bob's Sporting Goods, DelRe's Sporting Goods in Phx and Don's Sporting Goods in Scottsdale to name a few. All out of business now except for Al DelRe on S. Central. When I worked at the Jewel Box, it was touted as the largest firearms seller in the West. We not only sold in the store, but did oodles of business through ads in the Shotgun News. The Jewel Box opened in May 1949 at 41 South First Ave. To make room for Patriot's Park in 1976, the business moved to 601 North Central where it remained until the doors closed in May 2006.

Throughout 10 miles of varying habitat, from January archery to late December rifle - there wasn't a day I could keep count of deer seen. I saw 50-100 coues/day and consistently saw dinky 3 points and forks pushing big doe groups. I passed on stalks and shooting opportunities every day looking for something bigger, only to shoot a great circumstance buck on December 29th, pulling a double with my brother.
