I have been hunting javelina with a rifle and pistol for a few years now. After several close encounters, I finally tagged one on a rifle hunt last year. This past summer I decided to take up archery hunting. With all the bad luck I have had hunting javelina, I figured, why not try with a bow. Seems like a good idea to me šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£. After all, I have heard multiple times people say that javelina are gods gift to archery hunters. Well I guess those people are correct!!! Never imagined on my first day out hunting javelina with a bow I would have tagged one. What a way to start 2020. Happy new year everyone!!!

Thanks to deer not being so wise during the rut, I was able to bring this buck home with a last ditch evening hunt for the year. The rolling hills and cliffs near me, when they are in the rut, are very conducive to hunting as follows: walk until you see some in a little canyon, since you are not being careful, they are usually standing up and looking at you but they usually donā€™t spook too bad, back out the way you came until they canā€™t see you, and circle around down wind and pop over as close to them as you can for a shot. Shot this guy from a large boulder cliff, 67 yards down hill.

My boy Lucas harvested a 101 last year and went into this year with two goals in mind. One was to beat his brother who harvested a 118 in November, and Two was to better his best of 101. We located a 120 plus in November, but could not relocate him on this hunt. We were down before Christmas for 4 days, and spent to entire hunt looking for the one specific buck. When we went back down on Dec. 26th Lucas said, "Dad, lets start looking for some different deer". We hunted 6 different locations in 3 days. 10-20 bucks per day was the average, but couldn't put anything in front of him that he wanted to shoot. As it worked out, his employer put him on the schedule to work on Saturday even though he had taken the time off. Lucas informed me that he really want to return to work the following day at 4pm as scheduled. This left us a couple of hours on Sunday morning to get the job done. We glassed several spikes and small two points at sun up, but didn't want to shoot them. Around 9:00 we glassed a really good buck watching over 2 does. We made our move and closed the distance from 1200 to 550. we relocated the buck, but could only see his head above the ridge. we set up for the shot and waited. We watched the buck follow his girls into a deep cut. Lucas and I rolled the dice, as he had to be back in Phoenix by 4. We hiked in on the back side of a ridge across from where the buck should be. We set up glass and located this buck 375 across the canyon. It was not the buck that we went in after, but with zero time on the game clock he decided that is was a very cool and unique 4x3 with close to 5 inch eye guards, and it was a buck that he would be happy with. One well place 150 nos "AB from the 300 wsm and it was down. Some quick pics, took care of the meat and cape, and packed him out without a rest. I sent him back to town with a friend, and he made it to work on time!! He better get employee of the Month for this one!! lmao In closing; I remember getting scolded a bit last year for him passing a ton of bucks in search of one over 100, and may get a little of that again. However, I stand to my guns on teaching my kids that patients, hard work, being selective, delayed gratification, and being picky to wait for what you want, are good life lessons. Enjoy, Whitey

Had high expectations headed into this hunt. Hunted 1 day each weekend when the hunt started then hit it after Christmas when the weather went to crap. Was happy to kill this buck when I did.

I don't post on here much but like most of you I get on just to see cool pics of cool bucks. I feel this is a buck many would enjoy to see. Luck: when preparation meets opportunity. Thatā€™s the best way I can describe this hunt. Due to some life events I didnā€™t not have time to scout much this year. I actually missed the first day of the hunt and the second day committed to helping a friend fill his tag on the one day he had free. We had some luck filling his tag with a nice 90ish buck then it was game on for me and my tag. It would be a solo hunt for the rest of the season which I mostly do and prefer in most ways. I decided I would hunt a spot that I nicked named ā€œThe Holeā€. Itā€™s a spot I have looked at in previous years, one years was covered with decent buck, then some years I have a hard time turning anything up. I had never taken a deer there but knew it could hold a good one since it was a ā€œholeā€. This spot is not hard to access but I knew itā€™s a spot hunters overlook and I call it ā€œThe Holeā€ because, while itā€™s not that hard to access and not that far of a hike, itā€™s a pain in the butt to hike in given the brush and terrain. The only good glassing spot is pretty uncomfortable and with an all-day sit during an early season you WILL get burnt. I get to the glassing spot with a good 30min sit to cool down before its even light enough to start glassing. This is done for a reason as while most of what I glass from here is a good 1000 yards away, one of the better bucks I had seen in years prior was on a small ridge just in from of the glassing point about 350 yards away. As most of you know that darn close to get to Coues especially just to glass so I knew getting in there in the dark was a must. I sat there and set up the glass on the tripod and started glassing before there was much light to even see anything, thinking ā€˜Well itā€™s about that time when lots of hunters are just waking up and the deer are the most activeā€™. Through the low light I make out the form of a deerā€™s body on the ridge just in front of me at 375 yards. I make out some antlers and continued to watch as the light began to make it easier to see. Due to the subdued light I couldnā€™t tell exactly what he was and being the first deer that morning I began looking around to see what else may be out. For about 15-20 min I looked around for more deer and not seeing any other and I kept going back to the buck I saw. He was slowly feeding uphill as I was getting a better look. I could not see his main beam on one side so I thought he was a big 2 on one side and a 3 on the other. To be honest I still wasnā€™t sure it was a buck I wanted to shoot to end my hunt so quick. Finally got an angle seeing it was, what I thought, a good 3x3. This look was just after coming back to him and I thought well that looks like a good buck maybe another one showed up. The decision was made at this point to shoot but it took a bit to find a place to set up, the buck only being 350 yards now. While getting the gun set up the deer disappeared on me. It was now maybe 15 min before sunrise, yes that buck was on his feet for just a short while in the daylight. The last spot I saw him was on the edge of a large brushy patch so I figured he was in there somewhere. The wind was howling to and he was on the shaded side from the wind so it made no sense for him to leave, my gut told me hes still there. I watched the brush for about 45 minutes and I catch the buck up for just a few seconds as he shifted in his bed. No shot before a bedded back down, but now I knew where he was and could make out bits of his antlers through the brush. I made sure the gun was ready and got the phone scope set up to film the shot and the wait began. I waited for about 45mins and at was getting back on the gun to make sure it was ready. Well I looked in the scope and there he was standing. He was now looking over his shoulder and looked uneasy. Not knowing if he was about to bolt I decided to bag the filming and take the shot. At 350 yards I felt 100% confident on the hit but watch to see if anything runs off the ridge and nothing showed up. I gather my gear, make the short hike across the small canyon and find this. When I pull him out of the brush he just got bigger. I did not see all the mass, extra points, and thought how stupid I was in thinking I may pass. I was gitty for a while and got to work. The pack-out was heavy and sucked but I loved every minute of it. Yes, luck had a lot to do with it but my preparation, previous knowledge and opportunity all aligned for this hunt. I've had the privileged to take some great buck, working a lot harder to do so, but this is my best. Sorry for the long read that did.

Looks perfect, Stanley. šŸ‘ I did some about two weeks ago, and coincidently we're having some tonight cold that is fixed like tuna salad. I break up a pretty decent size hunk and add mayonnaise, chopped onions, celery & pickled jalapenos. Flavor to taste with horseradish, a bit of chilli or chipotle powder, salt and pepper. Then squeeze some lime juice on top when on your plate. Another concoction is a dip. Shred a piece of salmon and mix with a pint of sour cream. I use dill, salt & pepper and chipotle power to spice it up. I usually eat it on crackers as an appetizer. Right now, I have two pork roasts for pulled pork and three slabs of ribs marinating in the fridge. They go in the smoker manana.

Man is the deer herd so bad that the poor lions have to eat on liberal hikers?
  15. 1 point
Man that stinks. Also proabably want to make sure you are 1/4 mile away from the houses on the north and the south in the future. New rule in place requires archers to also give habitable structures the buffer zone... I don't agree with it, but that's what they passed.

Donā€™t worry no one will follow those cords and hunt there ever.

Cool buck! No need to defend yourself over how you decide to hunt. I personally have just as much respect for the guy who shoots the spike for the meat as I do for the guy who holds out. People forget what huntings all about too much these days. ive decided that if any of my kids decide to hunt, their first deer will be very small. Mine was a spike, and it instilled an appreciation in me that Iā€™m still grateful for. Seems like your approach is working just fine too!congrats!

This was probably about my 10th consecutive late bull hunt that i had wolf problems. The last few years they have been in places where you wouldnā€™t expect to see them. There are SO many more than the ā€œexpertsā€ will admit. Good thing ours are 70lb domestic dog hybrids and not 150lb canadian gray wolves.

Took my buddy and his daughter out pig hunting this past year. First day was a snowy mess yielding no pigs. The following day we were able to turn up a group of pigs about a mile away. Took his 12 year old daughter and a pretty steep hike to get her 290 yards from the bedded pigs. One well placed shot from her 6.5 Grendel and the rest was all smiles!! Good day for sure Whitey Raegan_pig.mp4

Or, be prepared for a much closer bow shot! I do not even hunt deer, but have ran into coues nearly every January 1st for the past 20 years hunting javelina in unit 33. I do not know beans about antler size, but they all look respectable to me!
