8 pointsAlright just getting home. Long Day. Go through the elk stuff pretty quick. I go to Bulltopia and only see one small (300ish) bull. Then a herd of 10 comes out and I think they are making there way to there normal bedding area all of sudden they make a sharp right turn catching me off guard and stuck in no mans land for the better part of an hour. then the skyline turns into stuff Kings Calenders are made. First wave second wave Small bulls make it to the point I am on. At least I thought they were all small until I looked at the pic just now. They catch my movement but that was ok I wanted this bull anyway I go the top of the hill I am on and I notice the main herd is still in the field after 800 and then they redirect. I put a play on the bulls I wanted. I didnt give them enough time to fall asleep and they bolt I notice that they start acting funny and redirect about the same spot the main herd did. I thought well maybe that lion from yesterday is back. It about 1100 now and I decide to walk by that spot and go to the point where the main herd goes and find a hiding spot for the morning. I get to where I saw the lion yesterday and hear snarling and the cat takes a stand at a headless head elk. It growling now and piercing through me with its stare. I'm 25 yards away. Oh Snap (it wasnt snap btw) angry cats kill people in California. It position is facing straight at me very low to the ground. (this is 1120 in the morning). I grab an arrow pull back as quickly as I can and put my first pin directly between his eyes. I was not doing this for hunting purposes I was doing this because I felt eminent danger to my personal well being. I release, expecting a dead cat, it jumps 10 feet in the air runs by at 15 yards up the hill next to me then crosses the field behind me. The voice in my head was yelling take the effin picture say I search for four hours, text a few friends and going through my phone for Houndsman. I text a few of those, no answer till later anyway. Then a friend says he knows a guy. They are there in less than two hours now 510. I had gone back the two miles to my truck (phone was dying) to take the two track in. within a minute of catching the trail (3 bear dogs 1 lion dog) they found the tree he was hiding in only 10' up and a tree I walked past at five times. They jokingly (i Think) said she wanted to take you out. I never thought to look up except for the time when I saw unnatural branch movement. The arrow hits the lungs perfectly and she runs 100 yards trees again. After waiting a few minutes, no very last light, I put a third arrow into her and 30 seconds later she falls. Back to elk tomorrow and a trip to G&F. Pics on the next post they are on my phone.

4 pointsMy wife and I both drew October coues tags and couldn’t be more excited. I decided i was gonna try to scout as much as possible I would take my little boys out with me as much as possible and they sure loved it one day we even glassed up a nice bear and they were able to see it. Opening day finally rolled around at the wind was terrible we got to a glassing point and after not finding any deer in the bowl we decided to back out a little bit and sat above a cow drinker as it was the only water near by. As i set my tripod up and start glassing my wife tells me hey here comes deer. I look over and see it’s a mule deer and 2 fawns, i go back to glassing and about 20 seconds later she says hey another deer it was the smallest spike i had ever seen at 200 yards i could barely make out nubs. He kept looking over his back and i knew more deer must be coming in . After probably 2 minutes or so another spike and a little buck comes in I tell her grab the rifle well she already had it and was starting to get set up. We watched him drink for a few minutes then they started to head out well he stopped and was looking up other hill and i told her go ahead and shoot. She center punched that buck he took one big leap and when he hit the ground that was it. I was so pumped for her to get her first buck. The next morning we went out and couldn’t turn anything up. My mother in law had to go back home Sunday morning and my Wife had to go back to being mom so i decided to throw my bedroll in the jeep and go try a spot by myself for a day and a half after getting up there i ran into way more people then i thought there would be there all summer no one was there but coming hunting time it was packed. I still gave it heck the 2 days i was there, i could only turn up small bucks and decided to go back to town to try a new spot. I called a buddy and we went out Monday to try another area. We turned up several small bucks but still nothing i wanted, as the day went on i really thought about settling for a smaller buck but just couldn’t get myself to do it. Well it was about 430 and we were headed back we stopped and glassed one last spot, as i get my tripod set up i focused my glasses and had a nice buck in my sight picture after about 10 seconds i decided he was what i was looking for. I dialed the 260 up to 450 yards get steady and squeeze one off. It was a hit but i couldn’t tell how good i grabbed my pack and rifle and headed across the canyon to look for blood, well i get over there and couldn’t find blood my buddy walked me into the last spot we seen him still no blood as i set my pack down to look a little better i look down about 30 yards and see the buck jump out of his bed he ran across a little draw and i hit him again on the run. I watched him crash into a tree and hear him death moan. I give him like 15 minutes and walk over right as it was getting dark. Well i walked to the trees i seen him crash into no blood no buck i really start to second guess myself. I then pull a really bone head move and set my stuff down to make some circles. Well it got so dark so quick that i couldn’t find my stuff. I walk back to my buddy and we decided to just come back in the morning would be the best idea. We got back the next morning i find my stuff right away and start to circle. I find a huge blood trail and it takes me to my buck well the trees he went into was less then 20 yards from where i dropped my stuff. Thanks for reading and if someone could help me turn the pictures I’d appreciate it I’m not sure what i did wrong!

2 pointsSo, my older daughter, Paige (28 w. Kids of her own), drew an early cow tag this year in 7W. She drew a 7W bull tag in 2016, but was 3 months pregnant, with morning sickness, sick as a dog with a cold, plus had a new job which meant she could not miss any time. Needless to say, she basically slept the entire hunt in the back seat while I looked to get her a shot in super snowy & cold conditions. Actually almost made it happen on day two, but first legal light, overcast, and snowing made determining which elk was the 5x5 against the deadfall impossible, so we let them walk at 160 yards. That was her first elk tag since she was 11 years old, 14 years earlier. It turned out to be one of the best elk hunts I have been on, with my son-in-law taking his first ever big game animal on the last day after passing or missing opportunities on 45 other bulls. Since my Father-in-law passed away in Jan 2016, and gave me his 7RM and asked me to build it up and kill an elk with it for him (something he had not done in the 25 years we hunted together), it was my goal to have the entire family do just that to honor him. Taylor was the first one to ever kill an elk with it in Oct 2016. A nice cow in 7W, my Father-in-law's favorite unit. Paige missed her opportunity in November on that bull. Then, I killed my bull in 7E in 2017 with it. So the pressure was on to get Paige an elk with it. Now, I knew I was going on the hunt to be chauffer and guide, but I expected my son-in-law to be with us the whole time as well. He went, but his role turned into camp beyotch/babysitter for my two granddaughters (2yo & 9mo) while just Paige and I were hunting. I love my son-in-law and granddaughters like my own life, but to have the opportunity to spend a hunt alone with Paige was truly a blessing, since the chances for just her and I to spend time together anymore are extremely rare. So, before the hunt started, I got Paige out to the range to zero the 7RM and my .280AI as a back up to her shooting. She shot a total of 24 rounds, 3 rounds from each rifle, from the bench, then 3 different shooting positions. All at 200 yards... Sitting with bipod front/rear. Sitting w. Bipod front, stool rear Prone Yeah, I think she is good. We loaded up Thursday and headed out. My son-in-law already went up with their big 5th wheel, so I borrowed a little trailer for myself. Got up there late, so we all crashed in the 5th wheel that fist night. Opening day broke a little chilly at 32°, and Paige took a page from Taylor's Playbook of Hunting w. Dad.... Day 1: 35 tanks checked, 4 w. water, seems like 40sq miles glassed, 0 elk seen. Day 2: Cold @ 19°. Checked another 25 tanks, 2 held water. Saw 4 cows in camps, which meant they were around, but scarce. We found a tank that had water, but no other tanks within about 4 miles that we checked had water. It was kind of close to a road, amd wide open in the middle of a big meadow. Very visible from the road. We decided to sit it anyway, in hopes elk would come to water during legal light. We got there about 4:00pm after glassing every hill on the way there. Got set up, and I really wasn't expecting to have anything come in during light. But I kept practicing saying "Here they come" in my head. Paige was reading a book. 5:00 on the dot....I whisper "Here they come!" From 200 yards out, at a trot to the tank which is 100 yards away from us. 7 cows and a nice, but still young, 7x7 bull. Paige spazzes out, throws her book and starts moving all around. I tell her "Slowly! Move slowly." "Get the gun up...slowly!" "Chamber a round....slowly!" "Shoot that lead cow.....as.soon as she stops." Within 30 seconds of making their appearance, they were literally diving in the tank at a trot. 6 cows were in, one left and the bull bringing up the rear. I said, "Shoot that last cow before she gets in the tank...you have to do it now!" Quartering on...Boom! I watched her hunch, turn to trot off. The other cows stayed drinking after looking around. She went 40 yards and tipped over. Less than 1 minute had transpired. I told Paige, "Stay still, let them drink as much as they can." The cows kept drinking. The bull waited for 10 minutes, then walked in and drank for 5 minutes straight. After 15 minutes, they walked back into the trees, looking at the down cow as they went. Sure would have been nice if it was a bull tag... So we completed they family quest to fulfill my Father-in-law's wishes to kill an elk for him. All 3 of us have helped with that. A few tears were shed as we discussed it. A few high fives were given as well. A lot of memories were made as well. For me at least....apparently, two kids under 3 years old takes its toll on your sleep habits.

2 pointsheck yeah it was you were the next headless elk. I think its f'n cool you post awsum pics. you find some amazing animals. I was pretty close on my hill billie story you gotta admit. I had a lion a few yards away from me up by mt trumble that I called in while trying to call in a yote across the road. he was just laying there staring at me not growling but when I turned around and saw him he scared the f out of me. I never heard him come in just felt a weird presence. when I turned around with my rifle and he spun around to haul butt way I swear his tail brushed my hand.

1 pointAfter many years of looking at trail cam pics and then live pics and video and then dead critters, I can about 100% guarantee that buck is bigger than 150. I would even go out on a limb and say it is close to 170 but who knows. What is even worse is trying to judge a buck on trail camera in the dark. The darkness takes a lot away

1 pointNewsflash, if you get an animal scored by 2 out of the 3 clubs that do scoring, deductions are part of that score. Get over it! Besides he never specified which scoring method or SCI specifically. Not sure what your beef is with me or this topic in general. Other people on here mentioned deductions and I don't see you harrassing them. Besides, you are late to the party. This thread is almost 2 months old, resurfacing for some unknown reason. The funny thing is, I tend to agree with you that a gross score is more meaningful, but thats not how 2 of the major clubs do things. Again, I don't make the rules, nor have I ever had any if my animals measured. Can we just agree to disagree and move on?

1 pointThe hunter was able to locate the bull and was able to harvest all the meat. It was a lower gut shot and the guts plugged the hole and he was bleeding internally hence why we couldn’t find a entry wound or a blood trail. Contacted game and fish while I was out and had service and they came out which was nice to see. Update on the scout, it’s dry up here and we haven’t been able to locate any elk.

1 pointAfter five days with a rookie, my niece closed the deal on a little spike the last day. Managed to see a total of 6 dink bucks. Was a great learning-teaching hunt for her. A big thanks to G&F for ruining a good unit with more "opportunity".

1 pointHad it for some time now just thought I'd share. No monster but I don't chase horns or have a posse holding my hand. Thanks for great work again Brandon.
