8 pointsMy son got it done on the second day. Due to the national forest service extending the fire closure in 17B to the 24th of October, we had to totally ditch our original plans and hunt some new country we have never been into. The first day was pretty rough, we only saw about 30 deer and the only 2 bucks were a spike and small forked horn my son was not interested in harvesting. Gotta give him credit for patience. Day 2, we tried some different country and had not even seen a deer until around 8AM when I picked up the buck about 2 miles out across a couple of canyons. We came up with a game plan, drove the truck down the hill, and hiked into our 1 landmark on the ridge, which was a lone mesquite bush. As we came over the ridge, we spotted our buck still up feeding and got into position for a shot. As my son was getting settled in, he saw another small fork bedded down in the bush right next the the larger buck, but the one standing was a lot larger. He dropped him in his tracks with a 320 yard shot across a small canyon. The other small buck never even got up out of his bed until we started making our way into the canyon. At that point the small buck and 2 other bucks, including a very nice 3x4 jumped up out of there beds and eventually made there way over the ridge. Wish we would have seen the 3x4 earlier, but my son had no regrets with the nice buck he harvested. It was a tough pack out, but my 14 year old hauled the back half out, over a mile through some rough country. I explained to him, they really taste good when you have to put that kind of work in.

4 pointsThey must not have governors tags in Pennsylvania, if that was Az there would be 20 people around him keeping tabs till someone showed up to shoot him. Then post pics all over the internet like they accomplished some great hunting feat. Awesome Bull

After spotting this bear at first light we put a plan in place after a two mile hike we arrived just as this bear was going to bed , we decided to stay put and wait him out. This made for a long day but finally around 5 he got back up and started to feed. She was very patient waiting for the right shot opportunity. The bear fed in and out of cactus patches not offering a shot it finally bedded back up and gave her a shot at 440 yards she made a lethal shot but this bear got back up she hit it again right behind the shoulder it went down but got back up and continued coming down hill so she followed up that shot with another perfectly placed shot. This time it was down for good . I’m very proud of her and everything she has accomplished I’m so lucky to share this with her. Here are the video links to her shooting and the bear as well. https://youtu.be/Bmx7swiJ-E0 https://youtu.be/MvkMfNfK9i8 1F252D2B-EA32-4EA1-A2F4-D0A283BBB5D2.MOV 6204EC82-9C9B-4819-A6AA-960E227BBCD3.MOV

2 pointsAfter 4 years, finally got drawn for a deer tag! I'll be chasing the grey ghost up in 22 the last week of Oct. Been hunting it since we moved here with otc tags, so I actually have a few spots lined up. Super pumped to finally get to dust off the 7mm Encore and hopefully knock down my first AZ deer! Good luck to everyone else with tags!! Pics to follow, hopefully!

2 pointsI have Swarovski 15’s (non hd) and needed glass for my wife but could not afford another Swarovski for her. The intensity 15’s were on sale awhile back so we rolled the dice and got a pair. We are are pretty impressed with the optical quality, time will tell how good the build quality is. If you want to look thru ours before you decide to buy or not just let me know.

To apply, visit www.azgfd.gov/hunting/draw. AZGFD is available to assist applicants with the online process. All department offices are equipped with customer computers that can be accessed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today, Friday, Monday and Tuesday. Customer service representatives also can be reached by calling (602) 942-3000. All department offices will be closed at 5 p.m. To expedite the process, applicants are encouraged to be prepared with the following before calling AZGFD: An applicant’s hunting or combination hunt and fish license must be valid through Oct. 8. All applicants, including youth (ages 10-17), who are applying for a hunt permit-tag must possess a license that is valid on the last day of the application period. Licenses can be purchased online at www.azgfd.gov/license/. Know your Department ID. This is a must to submit an application. For more information, see Page 9 of the “2020 Spring Turkey, Javelina, Bison and Bear Hunt Draw Information” booklet. Know where you want to hunt. It’s important to have your four-digit hunt number(s) pre-determined (not game management units). In the meantime, hopeful hunters might want to view a couple of short videos before applying for a hunt. Amber Munig, big game management supervisor, explains how the draw process works at www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpI0lLp5Adk. AZGFD provides step-by-step instructions on how to apply for a hunt permit-tag issued through the draw at www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UVVH7OGo0Y. For more information, call (602) 942-3000.

1 pointTime for another update, especially now that we're less than two weeks out. Jacob and the rest of the black belt candidates had their oral boards and written exam this past Saturday. Every candidate has to go in front of the black belt board and they are grilled with some very thought-provoking questions, at least as best as I can tell. I wasn't allowed in there with him. One of the other 11-year old candidates told us, as we were waiting on Jacob, that she started crying as soon as she opened her mouth the first time and didn't quit until she was excused. When Jacob came out, he snuck in behind me, so I didn't see him at first. When I finally turned to see him, his eyes were red and puffy, and it was obvious he'd been sobbing. He didn't say much, but gave me a thumbs up to let me at least know he was ok. One of the adult black belt candidates was next to him and I realized that she was the one he needed to talk to, so I turned around and gave him the space he needed with the only one who really understood what had just happened. This studio definitely does NOT give their black belts out; they are EARNED!! On the drive home from the studio, all he did was tell me to keep being me and encouraging him in my way and that he had some deeply personal things he needed to work on about himself, but he didn't want to talk about it. As much as that almost crushed me as a dad to not be able to talk and/or help him, I also knew that he had the situation under control and he'd earned the right and my respect enough to keep it to himself. He's 11, folks, and he's got his $h!t together enough that I'm slightly (more than slightly?) jealous of him. He's handling this stressful situation, on top of school (Basis School, no less, and his mountain biking team) better than most adults I know. At 11 years old, my son is more of a man than I'll ever be. That's what every dad wants, though, right. I hope to see some of you there next Saturday, the 19th. Between now and then, we're leaving Thursday morning for his youth deer hunt in 35A!

1 pointOccupied means being used, it may not mean that someone was actually there. Would you want someone hunting 240 yards from your house if you weren’t home?

1 pointMy son, Lance, took a beautiful 6x6 (2nd photo) last Friday (9/27) on a muzzleloader hunt. The year prior he took the other 6x6 on an archery hunt. It is great to see a child succeed on a hunt. Lance turns 14 this October 13th. I am so proud of the fine young man he has turned out to be. Memories neither one of us will forget. Proud Dad, Shane Luke

1 pointIf lions are so bad how many documented deaths in Az from lions attacking hunters at night? I thought lions only ate preppy folks on hiking trails in California. I would think folks living in the big cities have more to worry about in your own neighborhoods and malls than at night from a lion.
-
1 pointFolks need to learn to drive around and check other areas. Just because one basin is quiet doesn't mean the whole unit is not going.
-
1 pointThat’s why I wear my hat backwards. No way a lion can bite through a flat brim.

1 pointThe 22/23 youth camp is a great camp and there will be people more than happy to help you look for deer in 22 and get you started off on the right foot.
-
1 pointFirst off do you know how to hunt? Do you have a tripod and a pair of 15s or good 12s? Do you know how to glass properly etc? Since there will be help at the youth camp, for now make sure you have adequate gear and make sure your boy can shoot up to 300 yards in the meantime. And yes as stated above the AZ G&F website pretty much tells you where to start. Everyone wants their kid to be successful but it's still hunting, get out there and keep at it. Look up all you can on how to glass on the forum, it's all here.
