It's been a blast the last couple of mornings with my son and friends. I struggled yesterday, made some shotgun adjustments yesterday afternoon (definitely not blaming the shotgun it was 100% sucking on my part), and had a much better morning today. Between the two of us, we knocked 100 birds out of the sky. Yesterday I shot the beauty below that went straight to the taxidermist.

Hunted near PHX instead of Yuma for the first time. A lot less White Wings, but still good shooting.

I'll post updates later. Don't really know wh3re I am right now. Took the six mile hike to suicide tank. Hoping there would be water there wasn't. Killed my Saturday. Say six or eight bucks this morning but nothing that was interesting. Headed back into to deep reservation now. Grand canyon ?

I am a pretty average hunter and a below average gear guy, I use 150 dollar binoculars that I bought ten years ago. I usually use the two second rule in judging if its a shooter or not. Listening to Jay Scott Podcast, I hear him use the term 'cream' quite a bit. If Jay is the cream, I am more like grounds. To use a fishing analogy he would be in the private boat with a captains chair and my preference would be swigging coors lights on a party boat learning from other guys swigging coors lights. For the most part I do not like waiting for tags with this exception, I wanted to hunt the AZ strip once in my life. I will post daily as cell service allows my views and pics from 13b. People keep telling me I need to get a guide or buy a scouting package. Although I am sure it would help with my success, I consider hunting to be a test of what I know and what my intended quarry knows, (that and two daughters college tuition payments pretty much rules out buying anything) Here are some pics from my scouting. Big shout out to shane koury for helping me decide what a shooter is this year and pointing me in the right direction to check. First Buck seen Too cute not to stop and take a pic First real bucks A big three in the afternoon MY bison hunt sucked the majority of my vacation so my intention is to hunt the first few days then ten days starting just before labor day weekend. either my failure or success will be epic.

My season lasted a little over a half day. I got into my blind at about 7 am. Didn’t have any action until about 10 am, when a doe came in. After she left, nothing went on till just about noon when a two point came in. After that it was a steady stream of deer, couple spikes and does, till 1:30. I had about as much of the heat as I could take. I never had been so hot in a blind. I was wringing wet with sweat. At 1:45 I had enough. I got all my gear ready to go and took one last scan out of the blind to make sure I didn’t miss something. I looked up the hill and here came a big buck down the trail a long with a 1x2. I scrambled to get ready. The buck came right in front of my blind at 15 yards and was quartering away. Drew, settled my pin on the last rib, and released. The arrow it exactly were I aimed. The buck ran up the hill and stopped then walked off. I didn’t like the reaction of the deer so I gathered my stuff and went back to camp. Decided to give the buck two hours. At 4:00 I started on the blood trail. Not much blood. A few drops here and there. When I got to where I last seen him, the blood quit. Slowly I followed a few tracks and a couple broke limbs. 40 yards later there he was piled up. The arrow hit the last rib and came out on the back edge of the opposite shoulder. What an amazing day for a great buck! Brian

More then likely it’s an African sulcata. Very friendly for the most part.

Keep the rifle and buy a Rifle Basix trigger they are under $100 and take 10 minutes to put in. You can get them adjusted to under 2#'s. I have an Axis in 243 and put one in it. https://www.eabco.net/Rifle-Basix_c_3745.html

San Carlos is under 5% now, don't see much more ppl trying to fish it like a month ago. Not too much water coming in and plenty going out. The dirt tanks in the higher country are still producing good fishing for Bass, Cats, and Bluegill. Talkalai has definitely slowed down a lot with the hot temps as usual for this time of year. Ps. Sorry about my loud party😜 DAN

Man had a scare tonight. Got home tonight earlier than I was planning and drove past the house to feed horses about 80 yards away. Dogs were barking as they always do when someone comes to the farm and it alerted the ol lady. I didn’t tell her I was coming home early. As I’m feeding horses I hear a shotgun blast and then get peppered. I hear “Kenny is that you” and I say yes thanks for the shower. At least she was ready and willing to protect herself. Kinda funny and at the time I was like dang she did good lol.

An unreal number of hiking miles later I put everything together and shot one of the two bucks I was chasing. I actually missed this buck opening day in heavy winds. Had too much drift and admittedly, I was nervous and blew a quartering away shot. I hunted them for 3 more days and finally connected. He didn't get 50 yards after the shot but I couldn't see him, so I sat forever waiting him out I'm excited to say the least.

Went on a night fishing trip saturday the 17th. Got on the water at 9pm and fished till 9am. Had crappie lights set out and fished with minnows and jigs. Caught one throw back sized crappie and a blue gill. Bass fished from around 4am to 9 am, same thing NADA. Water clarity looks like the lake is turning over or something. Don't waste your time going there for awhile. There were several large parties going on at the north end boat ramp, glad we launched at the south end, didn't have any problems there. Haven't heard any reports from San Carlos lake even from our local fisherman ? Dan, maybe you can comment ?

This is absolutely true. I used to fly with TSA-approved locks until someone showed me the Federal Regs that counter this. Its actually a violation of Federal law to fly with TSA approved locks. When I get back to the office Tuesday, I can share that pdf of the CFR. Someone remind me, though!

Most of the time I don't twist out the eyecups. Sounds like you also have it zoomed all the way in. Zoom it all the way out to minimum power and focus it. Its best to find your target on lower power then steadily zoom in and adjust the focus as needed. I'm not a fan of angled spotters for the reason you mentioned and I definately don't carry 2 tripods. Also big spotters are heavy. I use a 65 mm so its not so tough to lug around.
