After the Yarnell Fire, they’re not going to send guys in willy nilly into a wilderness area chock-full of heavy fuels, box canyons and steep drainages, along with erratic winds, without assessing firefighter safety first. As others have mentioned, not calling planes sooner, I believe they were already committed to the Mountain fire burning near Bartlett lake. By that time, the Woodbury fire took off and was too late. Since there were no ground crews actively working the fire line in the Woodbury fire, they couldn’t use the planes since they work together. Just a perfect storm for that wilderness to go up in flames. It'll come back. Gotta keep guys safe first.

Been a while for a wild game post for me, trying to burn through some burger we made up last month so made some meatball style sliders. Buzzed up some croutons I made from a loaf of sourdough which I also made and added some Parmesan reggiano and table crackers as well as two duck eggs "thanks Edge" , tossed in a dash of Tony's and baked them on the grill for 13 minutes.

Reloading will probably be a felony soon as it can't be regulated. We are all aware CA gangbangers have Lee Pro 1000s setup in their clubhouses. This article helps explain the rabid, ignorant anti 2a culture to our north. And that's why I had to write my son a letter addressed to his county attorney in San Mateo, CA. The letter explained how my son, a legal firearms carrier, firefighter and reserve USMC member, came into possession of a Glock 26. It was a Christmas gift you ignorant CA commie azzes!

Yesterday evening removed the head of a rattler in our backyard. Put it in the garage fridge (per the wife) for a little science project today. There was something clearly in the back third of this thing due to the girth, pics don’t due justice as to the thickness, but I was itching to find out. I love dissecting these (A) to see what it has in its stomach (B) to save the skin (C) because I’m that kind of guy. As I was pulling the skin off, noticed numerous orange-yellowish gelatinous bulbs with dark spirals within them. Cut one open and pulled out a 3” earthworm looking serpent. The eye was completely developed much larger than the head. A total of (6) of these were waiting to be hatched. Cool as heck, but heck no having more of these around my house. Skin is on a plank waiting to be cured, roughly 3’ in length. The flip flops are size 14 for a reference.

I’ve been in the mineral lick game for at least 15 years now and have learned a thing or two. In the unit I primarily hunt, i do my “scouting” when there is snow on the ground and i can really see trails good. If you don’t have that luxury, just looks for “couesy” spots. If you want to hunt over the salt licks, find a good area and spend a lot of tome looking at your setup. As long as the salt is in a reasonable distance from a well traveled area, the animals will find it. I make sure i have a good camera location 20’ or so from the salt and preferably facing north, with south being option 2. I also find a ground blind location that is either exactly 20 or exactly 30 yards from the salt to take any guess work out of a potential shot opportunity. Some times mineral licks take a year or two to really take off and they always get better over time. I use loose mineral salt. The deer seem to like it better when it is dissolved into the dirt. Cattle seem to like it less when it is fully dissolved as well. Send me a PM if you really want me to get into depth on what i have learned based on feeding vs bedding areas, wind, approach, etc. anyone can throw salt on the ground and get photos of deer but it takes a lot more than that to “make” a hunting spot.

I figured I would just go and feed those dam blue jays. Seriously though, if ever there was a bird I would love to swipe off the face of the earth.

Yup its a DNR department of National resources. quite a few states are set up like that. everything goes through the state government. about 15 years ago a few people were trying to get our state to Change to a DNR instead of having a separate game and fish entity like we do now. While people bitch about Our G&F the last thing you want is the State government to get ahold of our G&F dept.

I think they could have put it out sooner, just watching and allowing a man made fire go for weeks isn’t exactly nature’s way. Cost is the cost. still hope I get the deer tag there

One that size tried to bite my dog in the back yard. Skinned it and scraped it and put it in glycerin and rubbing alcohol for 4 days then tacked it to a beautiful piece of cedar and hung it on the wall. The dog flips his paw at it.

Took the kid and her boyfriend out shed hunting today, She found the small elk shed in the 1st 10 mins then the old muley she 10 mins later. 1st time we went out specifically looking for sheds and she finds some. Last time we were on a turkey shed hunt trip and she found that deadhead.

I have never put one on public land, but we do put some up on our private land so the kids can see what is around. We have had good success in saddles and close to trails. We dig our salt in and water it so they have to dig at it. Cows don't seem to bother it that way either.

food at any time of the year is baiting and most scents have been outlawed as well to “protect our herds against cwd”. If you are in an area that doesn’t already have thousands of mineral licks and deer are in the area they will find it.

I FL size every rifle, and every time I load brass. I only neck sized once....by accident. I purchased a set of Redding 6CM FL dies with bushing FL, and micrometer seating die. Never even checked the dies. Got 300 pieces of Lapua 6.5CM brass and ran them through to neck size (before Lapua 6CM was available). After shooting them, ran them through the FL die and bumped shoulders .0015". I did a huge no-no at this point. Loaded them up without checking fit of resized brass in the rifle. Did 250 pieces like this. Well, I took 50 of the FL sized brass and decided to try some 115 Bergers in the rifle. Seated one long to check CBTO to lands, and bolt was very stiff to close. I figured bullet must be jammed hard into the lands. Opened the bolt, and the brass had a nice shiny ring around the body just below the shoulder. Measured the area on the FL sized brass, a piece of fired, and a virgin brass..... FL sized .463" Fired .463" Virgin .4615" WTH? Checked the dies.....my "FL" die is stamped "neck". Argh! Bought a new body die and a new FL die. Ran the loaded rounds through the body die. .4615". Smooth like butter. Moral of the story (X2, maybe 3): 1. Check your sized brass in your rifle before you load it. I have never, EVER, done this before. Don't rush the process. Double check everything. 2. Check your dies. Manufacturers can make mistakes. 3. Don't neck size.

Back in the late 80s and early 90s I worked along side my dad in the log woods up here in the 3c area, logging and thinning brush. There was a significant amount of work back then. It all stopped shortly after. 10 or so years later we burn almost half a million acres.

Always full length size your brass. Would just neck sizing your brass improve accuracy? Maybe by the smallest of fractions. If you were shooting bench rest then I might think about it. Even the guys shooting 1000 yard matches full length size their brass and do just fine. Now here is the down side. If you only neck size your brass and the tolerances are a bit tighter and you get a bit of something in your chamber you are going to have problems. The most important thing to consider in the field is reliability and full length sizing your brass will give you better reliability. Your Tikka should be able to get to 1/2 MOA accuracy with hand loads and full length sizing your brass. My Tikka does 1/2 MOA all day long. The difference in accuracy at 500+ yards has everything to do with knowing your rifle and how the variables affect the POI at those distances. Point in case. I have a hunt this fall where I will be at between 8000-10000 feet of elevation. I was in the white mountains this weekend and brought my tikka superlite .308 with me. I shot a few shots at 200 and then stepped back to 600 and killed a bit more paper to verify my load, gun, elevation, ect.
