We didn't have a lot of hope this year due to my wife tearing her mcl and ACL 2 weeks before the hunt. After a miss on the first stand, we regrouped and moved about 500yds up the mountain. The box call brought this guy in strutting. He paused at 65yds and she let him have it. We were done before 630am.

Not sure this all answers your question but context can be key. Until this year, I'd only carried a 24" Savage 110 chambered in 7mm RM that weighs 10 pounds. It has been great on a few 400+ yard coues and elk but it wasn't a rifle that I truly enjoyed shooting and carrying all the time. In addition to another Savage I own, and to round off the interchangeable centerfire fleet (for now), I recently bought their 20" lightweight storm 110 chambered in 6.5 Creedmor that includes a Zeiss 3-15x42 on top. It weighs 6.8 pounds and has various butt stock adapters to adjust LOP, the selling point as my daughter will use this rifle as she grows. It has been an absolute dream to carry on my recent coues scouting trips and it's proven to be maneuverable and shoots great out to 500 (so far), hammering coyotes as I've been fire forming its brass. I wish I would have purchased a shorter, lightweight carry rifle long ago. I've had a couple 10 and 12 mile days in coues country and I hardly notice it is there. In summary, I think 7 pounds scoped is a great carry weight, recoil is minimal, and I really enjoy the 20" barrel. In windy conditions, I would still pack my 7mm to effectively reach my self-imposed 5-600 yard game limit, so there is that.

Friday a bear trashed a miners camp about a mile east of me. They swore up and down they followed protocol not attracting with food and trash. Sunday morning he passed by my camp but I had nothing to offer. I don't follow the bear hunting guidelines/timetables but if there's a hunt now or coming up in 20A and you have a tag, pm me I want to drop a dime on this bruin.

I estimated the rear pad was about 5" wide. I tried and tried to take a pic but my camera and I are strangers. The folks downstream were non too happy with the bear, having young kids there on the claim. Reckon the parents had enough on their plate keeping the kids away from rattlesnakes and quicksand. We're in the bears yard I know, but maybe somebody with hounds could chase some sense into him

Of coarse lighter is better in Coues terrain but besides recoil value, stability plays a huge factor it weights of rifle and long range accuracy. With scope I prefer the 9-10 lbs rifle. On that note tho I don’t spend as much time behind my rifle at the range as I should and probably could shave a pound or two if I did

1/2 arsed would be a 200% improvement over what they have now.

Cool pics! Looks like there is a decent amount of runoff still going on up there. Bradshaws are one of my favorite places around.

Fortunately CW doesn't relegate sponsors to a section the members would never see. What would become of the sponsors if they couldn't talk to the members? Our CW turnout & referrals have been remarkable - again - so, lots of people appreciate it. We'll go away in a day - we only hit the campfire hard a couple/three times a year with hunting and shooting relevant information. Until then just skip to the threads you'd like to read. That'll make it just like any other day.

I'm a brand new Couse hunter but am stoked to start. I drew 24 - I'm looking forward to a tough but fun hunt.

I drew a 24 Coues tag... was a tough hunt last year...shot a buck, but was rough. I swore I wasn’t going to put in for that hunt again, but after all the effort I put in learning the unit, figured I’d give it one more shot
