My Brother in law in South Dakota found this Shed the other day. He had seen him on the hoof. He said the other side was a typical 4pt. When he spotted the horn in the snow he said it looked like a piece of driftwood. Thus he named the buck "Driftwood" Wonder what he will be next year?

I was reminded that today is National Vietnam War Veterans Day. I always forget about it because every day was Vietnam Vets day growing up and it still is, at least to me. I was going through more pics again last night and came across these two pics. Yes, dad made my life heck growing up, but there were good times and the good times far outnumbered the bad times. It was more that when the bad times happened, they were beyond horrible, bu that's another story. You've heard me elude to it before in other posts. At the end of the day, he was, and always will be, my hero. He taught me more about life, being a man, being a dad, and being a leader than I'll ever be able to thank him for. I was raised, in no small part, by an entire company of hardened combat paratroopers. To all of you Vietnam Veteran's out there, thank you for all you have done, endured, suffered, and triumphed over. You have my deepest respect, admiration, and, yes, love. Here are a couple of pics of dad and his mortar squad laying down some hate on the NVA or VC (maybe both). My dad is the skinny guy in the front with the tattoo on his right arm.

First, I would like to start by saying thanks for reading this topic. If I was asked the question in April “would you like to hunt in Africa”, I would have replied “someday”. However, life can take a sudden change and someday becomes now. South Africa is a wonderful place, in fact it’s a hunter’s paradise. It resembles Southern Arizona in many ways. My son, brother in law, friend and I booked a hunt with Crusader Safaris and it was absolutely everything I / we could have hoped for. We flew to Port Elizabeth (PE) from Phoenix, the travel was the worst part, total flying time is roughly 24 hours (not including lay-overs). In case you’re wondering PE is on the Southern Tip of South Africa http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Elizabeth the outfitter arranged for us to stay the night at a Guest House to rest. The next day a guide picked us up and we headed to the Lodge that was a 2 hour drive. As we drove to the lodge, a pack of baboons were spotted and shots quickly rang out… the baboons we encountered on the hunt were very wild animals that are smart and move fast and make all kinds of noise…. After getting settled in at the lodge and taking a few shots with the guide’s rifles, we headed out. We split up with two awesome guides. Within an hour, we spotted a herd of Impala, the stock was on and I was fortunate to harvest this impala with a 180 yds shot that concluded day one. Warthog taken by my friend. Duiker taken by my brother in law. Day two: I brought my bow and decided to sit in a blind. Oranges were placed and before we knew it a pack of monkeys came in and I let one have it…. As we sat in the blind, a group of baboons came in, a large male came in and I let him have it…. Short video of the shot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GwU4nU3pN8&feature=youtu.be this concluded the morning hunt. In the afternoon, I sat another blind. A nice Kudu bull finally came in, unfortunately I thought my camera was recording but it was not… Day three: during the previous days, I explained the beloved Coues deer to the guide. He thought I would like to hunt Bush Buck… these are skittish little animals that, as their name states, live in thick brush. We would try (and succeed) to shoot one with my bow, spot and stalk… this took all day and finally right at dark it all came together… Days four and five: plans were made to head to another area to focus on spring buck, gemsbok and kudu, this would have us staying at a guest house… which was a great experience. Spring buck I shot, my son shot a cull spring buck. Bro in law and friends spring buck Kudu Gemsbok Day 6 – wanted my son to shoot a warthog (female can be shot for a very reasonable price), the wind was miserable and after glassing for some time we finally glassed up some hogs and the stock was on. While walking to the group, spotted another herd and my son made a great shot…. While driving out, this hog was routing in a field, we stopped and it never noticed us…. I got out with my bow in hand and let an arrow fly… see the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGQHI3KZAgo&feature=youtu.be thing just dropped in its tracked, right through the front shoulder into the heart. Last day- I still had a blesbuck on my list, I “traded” the male for a female and a female wildebeest … blesbuck not my most favorite animal to hunt… but I shot this female, The wildebeest was a blast, these things are wild… spotted a herd had to crawl about 100 yds and my son made a perfect shot… more pics from a wonderful trip

Sorry to hear about this coach. Don’t be too hard on yourself though. I’ve got friends and family members that have struggled with suicidal depression and one of them once told me something that stuck with me. They said “picture the worst feeling you’ve ever had in your gut, maybe it’s a terrible break up, waking up the morning after drinking too much when you said something stupid and all you can think about was how much of an idiot you were, heck even wounding an elk or deer you can’t find. Now take that feeling and multiply it, and throw it in every morning when you wake up, every evening when you are trying to sleep, forever.” That’s what severe depression feels like I guess. I can’t even imagine having to live with that. We all think that somehow we could talk to someone like that and “snap them out of it” or “talk some sense into them” but fact of the matter is it’s a lot harder then you and I all think. Depression is a legit disease and unfortunately it’s surrounded by so much stigma that it isn’t treated like it should be.

Some of the Anschutz models come threaded. https://www.anschutznorthamerica.com/sporting-models.html if you order from Cooper, they can thread the barrel as an option when you customize it.

I wasn't crying about it, I was commenting on the Gul of the filmmaker. I was under the assumption that you could not shoot from a road but apparently that's a gray area. For the record I hunt more than most and have accomplished things you flat brimming, ear tuckers would never attempt.

I realize this is an old post, but I've been to Ridgway, PA, three times and I stayed in St. Mary's two of the three times. Real small town that was fun to stay in.

Here are some pictures of my second trip to South Africa. The first was a plains game hunt in the Orange Free State. This time we were in the northeast Limpopo province on a 20,000 acre preserve that bordered Kruger National Park. The terrain is vastly different than in the Western Cape or Orange Free State. Quite dense brush, but the animals, birds and even the insects are amazing. The hunting was challenging. We did most of it on foot, tracking in the dense brush. About the only animals that were not in the preserve were Hippo, Lion, and Elephants. Fortunately never ran across a Black Mamba, but our tracker assured us that they were around. South Africa has done a fantastic job at preserving and restoring it's habitat. The area we hunted was a cattle ranch 30 years ago. The game is fantastic to eat. The Cape Buffalo and Kudu meat is far superior to any beef or game I have had. The grilled Kudu tenderloin is a delicacy that has to be experienced. My outfitter was Ernest Dyason who runs Spear Safaris, an absolutely first class outfit. My guide was Koos Moulder. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of the animals and their behavior, and the tracker, Shingeta, from Zimbawe, had superb tracking abilities. He had been doing it since age 10. The Elephant and Hyena pictures was taken on a day trip to Kruger. The Giraffes were on the hunting preserve. This was an anniversary trip with my wife, Shirley. Normally a little timid about bugs and spiders, she was along for all of the hunting in the brush. She was so taken by the experience that 5 inch black and yellow spiders, present everywhere, did not phase her. On the first day, 20 minutes into tracking the herd of buffalo pictured, she leans to me and whispers, " I love this!"
