One thing cool about the mountain is its history. Fort Apache, how Pinetop became a place (bar for soldiers), the old rail road and Maverick. I still love going into Charlie Clark's in the bar area where there are caricatures of generations of locals cover the walls, and go hey I know him and him.... The mountain has changed a lot over the years, but it's still a place where every face, every family has a history. And the older SOB rancher you can share a beer with, the richer that history becomes for you, personally. That arrow tree - it's part of our history, part of our legacy. Luckily, all three of my sons got to see it in its glory days, and appreciated what it stood for.

There are probably more bullets falling from the sky in Phoenix everyday than arrows behind the tree.

That tree holds a lot of memories for generations of archers that travel through that part of state. Some friends who put arrows in that tree are no longer with us, others are getting pretty grey, yet others who were just kids are now taking their kids hunting. Every trip up or down 191 included stopping at the arrow tree. First arrow I put in the tree must have been late 80’s or early 90’s. When my son was finally able to pull back a compound he couldn’t wait to put an arrow in the arrow tree. Not sure how or when the tradition of shooting the arrow tree started, but it seems like it’s always been a thing. Good memories, good friends, sad to see it fall but life moves on.

If the forest service considered it litter, I think the dead tree would have been cut down long ago.

Hope everyone finds what they are looking for and that shots hit the mark! Waiting for my brother to get off of work then heading out towards the big sandy to try our luck. Didn't scout that area but haven't turned up much good sign at likely spots so taking a shot in the dark in hopes of getting my brother his first "big" game animal and something to put on the table this year. Here's a little motivation, my one and only, but it's cheating since I was on a ranch in South Texas where they are considered pests. Good luck everyone!!!

Usually cord wood or lumber guys don’t pay for trees/logs. Unless it’s something special.

Most times you don't need a permit, just call aps, they'll send out a trouble to pull the meter, then change breaker, then he puts the meter back in, nothing for county to inspect. Aps will tell you if theres a problem. Probably just need a big pair of alliin wrenches. It will be attached to metal arms from meter or /2/0 wire. Easy pesly

We were bear hunting below the rim one time, dogs trailed up towards the rim and treed. When I was walking up to the tree I started seeing arrows all over the place. It turned out the dogs treed the bear right where all the missed shots at the arrow tree were going. There was arrows all over the place, Probably just as many that were in the tree. I thought it was pretty cool

Had an uncle who lived in Springerville who would tell the story of how people began shooting arrows into that tree: In the 80’s much of the logging industry was being shut down due to the spotted owl. One afternoon a recently laid off worker from the sawmill was driving down 191 when he noticed a spotted owl perched on a branch of an old dead snag just off the road. He stopped, took out his bow and pinned the owl to the tree. Upon returning to town, he told others of his ounce of revenge. Soon a truckload of unemployed loggers was headed down the highway to see the small victory of logger over owl. They all shot an arrow or two at the hated bird, most missing, but sticking in the tree...and the rest is history. I will not vouch for the accuracy of this story or any others he told; but they all had a common thread, something in the woods got shot!

That is not a handgun. I am gonna try and get one this year with either my glock 42 .380 or Glock 19 9mm. Haven't made my mind up yet.

Never put an arrow in it but i’ve driven by it at least 100 times. Always wondered when it was gonna fall. Been in bad shape for years. On the bright side though, now every single person that drives by it won’t have to uploada picture of it to social media.

Iconic tree, been there for many many years. There’s a framed picture on the wall at the cafe in alpine.

Have to stop archery hunting then. How many lost arrows lay in the forest now?
