I put in for over 38 years and had max bonus points for the 2018 sheep draw and got tag #2 in Unit 28 (south). My son-in-law, Dan Ott, and 26+ year hunting partner, Ed Soyring, accompanied me and the guides, Tyson Hatch and Matt Holcomb of Double H Outfitters. We decided to wait till Monday, Dec 3rd to start hunting to avoid some foul weather and any conflicts with the other hunter in the unit who had been waiting for 51 years for tag #1. Congrats to Craig (and Matt) on his terrific sheep, which scored 189". We saw lots of sheep on the first day and tried a stalk but two big rams got into it and ran off before we were in position. The second day was more discouraging with fewer sheep sighted and the big one from the day before just walking off out of the area. Third day was the charm. High winds kept a herd of 7 rams and 1 ewe pinned down below some cliffs. Three different stalks finally culminated in a 176 yard shot on a very nice ram. Pack-out was easy. He green scored by G&F at 172-1/8” and 6 -7 years old. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ; and, also, to Chris, Matt, Tyson, Ed and Dan.

With a fresh coat of snow across Arizona on New Year's Day, I decided to head east from Flagstaff to Canyon de Chelly as I envisioned Spider Rock rising above the snow covered canyon. It was cold sleeping in the back of the truck at -3F that night and standing on the rim in the morning, but the view was warmth for a photographer's soul. The barren tree against the snow really captured my eye. This is quite different from the fall when the cottonwoods are a river of yellow. A Navajo tale has it that the top of Spider Rock is white from the bones of the bad Navajo children whom Spider Woman has eaten.

My best find for Coues sheds. These two were less than 50 yards apart. Found them about 3 minutes apart. I was pretty excited and spent the next couple of hours looking for a match for either one. Hard to tell from the pics but the main beam on the left one is 18" and the G-3 is close to 7".

Perfect way to kick off the new year! Got to our hunting spot by 9am, had two down by 11am and made it back home on time to catch some college football! This was my first Javelina kill, I've hunted them for 3 years now and was finally able to close the deal.

Happy new year guys, just wanted to share a quick story from opening morning . My brother had gone out to do some predator control, with the rain letting up he'd decided to make a stand and had gone with a high pitch hand call our cousin had given to him years ago. Hit the call for 15 seconds stopped for 30, hit it another 15 and before he could grab his rifle had this 100lb lion right on top of him. So mind you he was sitting on his butt when he had started to call so he was in a bad way. Within seconds he saw movement as She was lunging in such stride towards him she was covering 20 feet in each leap. Stopping in such a rush she actually stepped back with amaze at what he might be..they were now starring each other in the eyes for what lasted for about 10 seconds.. just giving him enough time to point and shoot!!.. just hit the safety ..point and shoot.. she was just inches from the end of his barrel. In the pik his shooting sticks hadn't moved, he set his rifle on his right side as he got up. Luckily that was that. and everything ended up ok. I think he might need some new boxers. One less deer killer in the desert, very proud of him for handling the situation like a champ!!

Rummaging through this year’s photos and came across this year's Europe photos. We spent bit of time in Europe this year, so here are just a few photos of the sights and towns we took in for those interested. First stop was in L’Isle-sur-la-sorgue, Fr which was a fortified town in the 12th century. It is known for it’s labyrinth of river canals, which provided mill power for industry. Gordes, Fr is a fortressed town in the Luberon Mountains, near the Rhone River in southern France. Abbey Notre-Dame de Senanque, Fr, a monastery built in the 11th century, also in the Luberon Hills near Gordes. Rousillion, Fr, once capitol of the ochre dye industry, in Provence, now a quiet hillside town. Oppede le Vieux, Fr, home to a medieval castle and the papacy in the 13th century. Once abandoned, but now making a comeback as buildings are being restored. Cochem, De, situated on the Moselle River, was first settled during the Celtic and Roman epochs. It became a town in 1332 and put up its fortifications then. Cochem is now in the Moselle River’s wine growing area, known for its white wines. It is home to Cochem Castle. This area is a famous wine growing area in Germany. It is also a much more quaint and less busy area than the Rhine. Beilstein, De, just a short distance up the Moselle River by ferry, was first settled in 800 AD. It’s castle history turned with the French forces overrunning it, and in 1794 the French Revolutionary Forces took over the region. The ruins of the castle stand on the hill top. It was destroyed during the Nine Years War by the French Army in 1689. Burg Eltz, De, near Cochem, a family dwelling begun in the 9th century as a small manor, became a formidable castle. It occupied an important place along the trade route between the Moselle Valley and the Eifle region. The castle withstood a multiyear siege, and has never fallen to invaders. Due to careful negotiations, the family was able to hold onto it throughout WW2. Rothenburg, De, in what was once separate Franconia, now Bavaria, is known for the medieval town and architecture. Foundations began around 950 AD. It is located along the Tauber River Valley. Dinklesbuhl, De, not far from Rothenburg, is another medieval fortified town founded about 1351 AD. It surrendered to the Swedish Army in 1632 but was spared. Appenzell, Switzerland (Ch), is the most conservative Swiss canton, mountainous, and is located in eastern Switzerland. Gimmelwald, Ch, is a remote Swiss village located high above the Lauterbrunnen Valley. It is a pedestrian town accessible by cable car. Oberammergau, De, is known for its woodcarving and rustic environment. It is located near King Ludwig's Neuschanstein and Linderhoff Castles. Marienplatz, Munich’s central square, contained the city’s town hall. Today it is a central visiting place for tourists. Nearby the Hofbrauhause am Platzl, built in 1589 by Bavarian Duke Maximillian and has become the most famous brew house in the world. This is not far from the Oktoberfest event grounds. Also nearby is Odeon Platz. Greenland, and a view of its ice sheet, just south of Uvtorsiutit. Appearance is similar to the ice age coverage on northern continental land masses. The only exposed land is near the oceans. The balance is covered under a solid sheet of ice, but is currently thinning. Newfoundland, near Torngat Mountains National Park, whose land mass is scoured by the tracks of glaciers now long since retreated.

Didn't feel like going out this morning but when I looked outside I knew I couldn't pass up the opportunity. Walked a couple two tracks looking for tracks just to see what the deer would be doing. Saw this guy a ways ahead of me and was able to work my way up and around pop up over a slight rise and let one fly. I knew right away he was mine. I won't say how many arrows I let fly I over the last few weeks. It felt great to finally connect. Momma even came out to take pics and help me drag him out. Now I got to help momma get one!

Never posted him before but this is the buck from the fish tank fire I just posted about in the campfire. It's been 6 years since I killed this buck and today was the first deer I killed since then.

There like shooting javelina. There a lot of fun to shoot, but once you've shot them you regret doing it:)
