7 pointsGot my first tag in about 15 years or so. Rifle unit 1! Bedded a herd last night and found them this morning. Got with in about 140 yards broadside shot and let it fly! Miss. Follow up with a second and third, both great hits, and dropped him in his tracks. Very excited for my first ever. Not a trophy record book but a trophy for me! His tops curl in and almost make a heart. My girls will love this!

6 pointsMy son decided he wanted to put in for archery antelope this year. He was able to get a new bow as he had outgrown his old one over the summer. He was able to practice, and put his time in. We were able to scout, although we had not been able to find any shooter bucks. We decided to hunt an area we had not been able to scout. We were able to get on a few different bucks, but he was not able to close the deal. We decided to go back to the area we had scouted in hopes some bucks had moved into the area. We were able to locate 8 bucks by 8:00 am. He was able to seal the deal on this buck! Very proud of him. He put in about 18 miles in three days of hunting, and never gave up.

3 pointsLast year was my oldest son's first pronghorn hunt, and this year it was Nick's turn. He's going to Creighton in Omaha, so I drove up to Albuquerque and met him at the airport there on Thursday night. Quick 4 hours of sleep, and we hit I-25 for the 2 1/2 hour drive up to the hunting area (Lancetkenyon and Zeke-BE know where it is... LOL). We rolled into the property right around 7AM and began seeing pronghorn immediately. We glassed for just a bit upon getting there, but then drove on into the ranch headquarters to say hello to the owner and thank her for letting us hunt there. Like last year, she was gracious and we had a nice chat. She mentioned that there seemed not to be as many pronghorn this year as in past years, but after hearing other reports and seeing Lance & Zeke's reports here we were optimistic. We had already seen one nice buck early in the morning upon getting on the property, and he quickly did what basically ALL others had done last year; As soon as we stopped the pick-up, he and his squad ran out to about 3/4 mile. When I got out to glass them with the 15s, they proceeded to run even further! So anyway, with that in mind I had a brought along a secret weapon. A couple of years ago when I had an archery bull elk tag, I had bought one of those fabric pop-up cow elk decoys. (Her name is Miss September! Got a good laugh at that when I bought the decoy....) I decided that I would try holding her up in front of us to try to get closer to some of those spooky bucks. Well, after visiting with the ranch owner we drove off and quickly spotted another nice buck and some does. He did his usual antelope-thingy and was in the next county in short order, but I hadn't had time to break-out the secret weapon yet. We drove up on a large knoll and glassed all around, and I eventually a nice buck popped up at about 1/2-3/4 of a mile out. I broke out Miss September, and held her up in front of me and started walking directly towards the buck with Nicholas walking right behind me. I walked a steady pace, stopping every 50-75 yards or so and the buck never broke his stare. We proceeded along closing the distance, and when we were at about 500 yards I was thinking it was actually going to maybe work. We are not big on super long distance, with about 400 yards generally being our max shot distance. Well, we kept strolling and eventually got to a nice little tuft of grass on a little mound of dirt. I stopped and check the range-finder, and the buck was still staring at us from just about 350 yards. The 30-06 is zeroed for 200 with 180gr. PSPs, and I told Nick to hold just slightly over it's back. He got on the bi-pod in between Miss September's legs and let it rip! The buck bolted for about 50 yards, then stopped and started to look sick. Within about 5 more seconds he was down. 9:30AM on opening day, and it was all over! Went and got the truck and drove right to him (we had met up with a ranch hand just prior to that and he said it was no problem driving across the pasture....). Anyway, two hours later and we were done cutting it up and enjoying a couple of sandwiches. Overall a GREAT hunt!!! Drove back last night so that Nick could spend the weekend with his mom (really, the other way around... lol). A 36 hour round trip for me, with only 4 hours of sleep but lots of great road-hours with my boy! He was nice enough not to nap it all away, and we had a great time the entire way! Getting done early let's me spend a couple of mornings at the dairy shooting doves before I leave for archery deer in Utah on Tuesday morning! I'm blessed! S.

2 pointsWhat should you expect from a company based out of San Francisco?

2 pointsIf you get onXmaps, and there is public land in there, it is legal to hunt. And it is illegal for anyone to keep you off any public roads that lead to it.

2 pointsGood to know. I take Losartan and as a solo hunter I am frequently on foot a couple of miles from camp and have been deep into Sonora a few times and a day from civilization. Anything I can bring to counter act the affects?

1 pointMy opinion is leave it. After 12 years I'd bet those deer depend on those nutrients.

1 pointI have had a camera out since early August and was a bit depressed at first. Overall growth seems to be down from previous years in the area I hunt. Just comparing old pictures to this year. Anyways, I was pleasantly surprised to see the growth over the month of August, with little rain most of the summer in my unit. This buck is only a forkie but he has impressive size. Last year he was a bit bigger, but still a nice buck this year. The first picture is from August 4th and the next two are from August 28 and August 30. I will be keeping an eye on him and see how he finishes out. I might pursue this buck as I think it would be a cool buck to harvest. I have some other good bucks hitting this particular waterhole but they aren't as wide as this one. Not sure why the pics are so blurry, they are clear on my computer. Anyways, thanks for looking.

1 pointThanks for the prayers everybody. Cast off today and doc said everything looks awesome! I think this is the first time I've obeyed all the instructions. 🙂 I'm in a walking boot now and starting pt tomorrow morning. Gonna get foot ready to be able to make at least some of this 13b tag hunt! Very thankful for docs wisdom and expertise. Most importantly i can get back to helping wifey with our toddler. I should also be in much better condition to help wifey with her October elk and deer hunts. 😀 Thanks, Mike

1 pointA year ago, a buddy back in Iowa sent me a picture of himself with a 3-4lb smallie at his wife's family's cabin on Rainy Lake in Ontario, Canada. His text with the picture said "Would this interest you?" That started a year-long planning process of getting his family's and our family's schedules lined up to spend a week at his wife's uncle's cabin. I haven't been to Canada in 35 years and going back there fishing has been high on my bucket list since the last time I was there. The short version is that all the stars lined up and we got back this past Saturday from a week up there. Fishing wasn't great by the Canada standards I remember, but was awesome by our standards here in northern Arizona. My wife is the only one who didn't catch fish, but she only got out twice and was only half-heartedly trying. She was more intent on getting the kids opportunities and taking pictures. Me, I was the net man, hook-remover, lure changer, hook-baiter, snag remover, new leader-tier, and still made time to fish for myself. I wish my son could have caught a pike, but he loved the smallies and walleyes. I wish my daughter could have caught a walleye, but she loved the smallies, pike, and perch. I ended up with 5 pike ranging from 3-5.5lbs, a handful of smallies, the biggest of which was 3.5lbs, and a couple of eating-sized walleye. My favorite part of the trip was our kids asking when we could go back to Canada, especially after hearing them moan and groan about going and fishing every single day as we were planning the trip. To be fair, I told them they didn't have to fish every day if they didn't want to, but I was going to be fishing every day. Our last night there, my buddy and I took off, kid-free, and had a blast getting into fish. We booked it back in, ate a quick supper, and loaded everyone up on the pontoon to go back to where we finally found the walleye. Jacob hooked a good one, but it broke off at the boat as I was trying to net it. Then he hooked and landed a good eater. Aside from my kids getting hooked on this kind of fishing, my other favorite was catching two pike in 10 minutes on the Savage 3d Suicide Duck lure I bought specifically for this trip. If you've never seen that in action, look it up on YouTube. Its beyond awesome to see in person. After my two, I gave the lure to my daughter. She had a strike, but missed it. It was even more amazing to watch standing next to her. My only goal not met was catching a pike on my 9wt fly rod. I used it a couple of times in the inlet by the cabin, but no pike were hungry. I got better distance and hauls, though, so its still a win for me. Morning view from the cabin First pike in 35 years First smallie in 18 years 3.5lb smallie Syd's first pike Syd's first smallie Jacob with a smallie Jacob's walleye (wiggling the whole time) 2nd pike on duckling lure Bite marks 5.5lb pike (my 2nd best) Syd and I doubled on pike Jacob and I doubled on pike and his first smallie Rainy Lake Sunset Learning to drive a boat Cabin at night

1 pointThought Id throw up a quick pic of my ND rifle buck from this november. Best buck Ive ever killed and probably will ever kill. I have no idea where this buck came from as I have no sheds or trailcam pics of him and I cant find any one in the whole county who has ever seen this buck. This is really unusual for our area as the deer are fairly visible in this flat country. I thought he was high 150s or low 160s when I shot him but hadnt seen a buck over 140 all season so I didnt study him much when I first spotted him, just knew he was a shooter. I was pleasantly surprised after I snuck in and shot him at 250 yards in a cattail slough. I couldnt believe how long his tines were! Despite being only 16 wide (inside) he ended up grossing 193 3/8. His G2s were nearly 13 and his main beams were over 25.
